Looking back: Thanksgiving

What a year! 2011... a year of lots of firsts for us! We have SO much to thank God for. This year we have seen his faithfulness and goodness through some of the most challenging and exciting times of our lives...
I thought this would be a good opportunity to actually put into words what I am thankful for... I float through life so often unaware of God's daily common grace that he gives to us in so many small ways.

This year I am thankful for...

The miracle of new life - I discovered I was pregnant right at the end of 2010, so 2011 has been a year of experiencing a first pregnancy - the excitement, the emotional rollercoaster, the nausea, the tiredness, those first little kicks, watching your body stretch beyond belief! It is truly a miracle... watching a new life growing and seeing how God has designed it all so perfectly.

Our beautiful daughter -  2011 will be a year we never forget because it signified the arrival of little Ava Margrete and changed our lives forever. Gone are the days of being able to go where you want, when you want... but you know what? I wouldn't change it for the world. We are SO blessed with this precious little bundle. Her arrival has made me feel emotions I have never experienced before - uncertainty (what is wrong with her? Why is she crying?) fear (what if I ever lose her? How will I cope when someone hurts her?) Frustration (Why won't she feed properly?) but also incredible depth of love for this little helpless person who is so reliant on you for everything. My hearts prayer for her is that, while she is still very young, she will learn to love the Saviour for herself. We are so very grateful to God for entrusting us with this precious gift.

My marriage - This summer, Dave and I celebrated our 3 year wedding anniversary... on christmas eve it was 4 years since we got engaged. I thank God every day for such a godly, generous husband and its been wonderful to see a different side of Dave as well since Ava has been born - Dave has become so protective of his little girl.

Family - I love being with family... we are so blessed to get on well with both sides of the fam and we love spending time with our Northern Irish, English and Norwegian family. Family is where we can be ourselves, where we can be completely relaxed, where we can laugh and cry and shout and smile. Family is where we're raw and real. I thank God every day for our families... for wonderful siblings and godly parents who are such an example to us. Thanks for all you are.

Friendship - We are so blessed with some wonderful friends who encourage us, pray for us, hold us accountable and are there for us through thick and thin. Friends like that are hard to find, and when you find 'em, you don't let them go... so thanks to all our friends. You know who you are and we are so grateful to God for you. Thanks for the good times this year - we look forward to many more!

Our Small Group - We are part of a small group at church who study the Bible every Tuesday evening together. This group has been such a support to us. We love studying the word together, praying with you guys and spending time with you... we feel very blessed to be part of a group which is so open and honest and real and we know how much we've grown as a result of being with you guys.

Beautiful creation -  We have been privileged to see some more of God's beautiful creation this year - we holidayed in the Cotswolds in May, travelled to the fjords of Norway in October and had great time in Germany and Austria in December. This world is full of beautiful places and we took the opportunity to stand back and admire God's handiwork on a number of occasions... there's nothing quite like soaking in creation for restoring the soul!

Music - I'm so thankful to God for music - I appreciate music so much. Listening to it, playing it, singing along to it. Music speaks to my soul and I can't imagine a world without music! This year we had the immense privilege of playing/singing alongside Bob Kauflin at NWA - what a gifted and humble man he is, and what an incredible songwriter. Its inspiring to meet guys like Him and exciting to see how God is using him to write some great music for the worldwide church.

Creativity -  I am so grateful to God that when he created people, he created us with the ability to create as well. There is something so satisfying about looking at something you've made yourself... all those hours invested are so worth it when you see the pleasure your creation brings someone else. Thanks to Nicole and the kids, I now have my beloved craft room where I while away many happy hours being creative. I'm grateful for the ability and resources to make.

The Gospel - I'm grateful I have someone to be thankful to... I realise I am totally undeserving of knowing the creator of the world personally... its pretty awesome to be able to say thank you to the person who flung the stars into space and allowed his precious son to die on my behalf...  ultimately, that is what I am truly thankful for, because without Him, my life would be meaningless; all of the things I am thankful for would be great, but wouldn't have the meaning they do... so I'm thankful to God for sending His Son to die for me, for allowing me to know him personally, for blessing me beyond belief and for being my heavenly Father who I can run to with everything - the highs, the lows, the ups and downs.

So its been a big year, and I'm grateful to God for so much more than I've been able to talk about in this post. God is good and faithful and generous and blesses beyond our wildest imaginings.

Hope you are able to find the time to reflect on God's goodness to you this past year too,

Enjoy New Years Eve,

Claire x

The Gathering

One of the things we are always thinking about as we prep the music for Sunday services, is how we can lead people to better appreciate the Gospel of Christ. The service is often a bit of a journey... we open with songs that tell the greatness of God and our thanks to Him just simply for who he is... we then move on to our own need for salvation, our desperate need for forgiveness and when we're down in that valley, we are ready to appreciate the beauty of the Gospel... in come the songs of salvation! How good is God that he should provide his only Son, Jesus Christ, to die for us, redeem us, save us, atone for us, give us new life and fill us with the Spirit! Once people are valuing the cross, they're ready to tell the world, and so we tend to finish with songs that send us out to share the Gospel with those around us.

Sovereign Grace produce loads of fantastic music that we use in Church. The lyrics are strong, the music is excellent and we (at CEC) love them! This past month, they have brought out their newest CD "The Gathering"... its purpose is to take us on the journey I've described above, and I'm so excited to buy it and get listening.

Here's what they say about it...
The songs on The Gathering can be sung apart from each other, but together they form a progression that reflects the gospel and our response to it. A call to worship (There is One Reason) leads to proclaiming God’s greatness (Greater Than We Can Imagine, Come Praise and Glorify). In view of God’s glory, we more clearly see our sinfulness and need for mercy before his holiness (Shine Into Our Night, Have Mercy on Me). We then rejoice in the good news that God has forgiven us and reconciled us to himself through the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ (Now Why This Fear and Unbelief, Isaiah 53). A fresh awareness of God’s mercy in Christ makes us grateful for his generosity and kindness in every way (Generous King), which leads to eagerly asking for more of his grace (When You Move). A desire to know God’s will through his Word (Your Words of Life, Show us Christ) is followed by expressions of commitment and communion (All I Have is Christ, We Hunger and Thirst). Having rehearsed and celebrated the gospel and its effect in our lives, we want to take this good news to the world (Lift High the Cross). A final song reminds us that we leave relying not on our own strength, but on the love of God, the grace of Christ, and the power of the Spirit (As You Go).

I'll review it shortly, once I've had a good listen through, but for now, I thought I'd leave you with one of my favourite Sovereign Grace songs of all time...

Creative days...

I LOVE making things... this year, my plan was to make all my christmas presents... I almost succeeded (I'm always defeated by the boys... what do you make for boys?!?) So all the girls in the family got homemade goodies. Its a start... perhaps next year I'll succeed in finding something creative that the boys will appreciate!

My friends daughter came over today and got her "craft box" for christmas. We had fun decorating it this afternoon and she's been beavering away all day making cards, finger puppets, posters and christmas decorations.

An afternoon of creativity!

Little Miss Creative

Lunchtime we were joined by Matt and Steph for a lunch of christmas leftovers (sausage rolls, christmas cake, nice bread, fancy cheese... we even had crackers!) and then the christmas favourite came out again - Nativity! Dave watched it for the 5th time in the last 2 weeks and still cracks up in every scene and Tig practically knew the whole script by heart. I love the relaxing, creative days that make up the holidays.

Snap happy!

My christmas present this year was a new camera... very exciting! These past few days I've been snapping away to my hearts content, learning phrases like "aperture", "shutter speed", "ISO" and "framing". It's like a whole new world and I feel like a little kid with a great present, but no idea what to do with it!

For this reason, I have been photographing and uploading a ridiculous number of photographs, and apologise in advance for any bad photography that will inevitably find its way onto my blog over the next few weeks/months as I get used to this new piece of technology... its a learning experience!

Anyway, this was Miss Chatty tonight!

Christmas Eve...

Today's the big day in Norway and Austria, so naturally, our celebrations have begun today... the joy of being an international family means you get the equivalent of two christmas days! Two big meals, two lots of present openings, two readings of the christmas story and two lots of crackers!

Here's some pics of our Christmas Eve 2011!

Waiting for the coffee to brew (I love the smell, even if I don't like the stuff itself!)

O Tannenbaum...

We are VERY late getting our christmas tree up this year... thats what happens when you go away in December, you come back realising HOW MUCH you still need to do before christmas, and buying/decorating christmas tree slides, unfortunately, to the bottom of the list of priorities. Still, at least we managed to get it up before Christmas eve...

Ava loves the lights!

Here it is in all its glory!

Last night Auntie Kristin came round for story time!

I love the run up to Christmas!
